Open the free Mute VideoRemove the sound, keep the picture. Runs in your browser.

To remove audio from a video, open the free Mute Video tool, drop in your video and press Remove audio. The picture is copied exactly as it is and only the sound is removed, so it takes seconds even for large files and the quality doesn't change. It works with MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV, and nothing is uploaded.

Why remove the sound from a video?

  • Removing background noise, wind or chatter before posting
  • Taking out copyrighted music so a platform doesn't mute or block the video
  • Sharing a screen recording without your voice or notification sounds
  • Preparing a clip to add new music or a voice-over in another app
  • Making a silent background video for a website or presentation

How do I mute a video step by step?

  1. Add the video. Open Mute Video and drag the file onto the box, or click to choose it. Files up to about 2 GB work on a computer.
  2. Check it. The video plays in the page so you can confirm it's the right one.
  3. Press Remove audio. The first time, the video engine (about 31 MB) loads and is then cached.
  4. Download. The silent video downloads automatically in the same format.

How does it keep the quality?

Videos store picture and sound as separate tracks inside one file. Muting copies the video track bit for bit and leaves out the audio tracks, with no re-encoding. That's why it's both fast and lossless. In the rare case that a format can't be copied this way, the tool re-encodes the video to MP4 automatically and tells you.

What if I only want it quieter?

Removing the sound is all or nothing. To make it quieter (or louder), open the Video Editor, go to the Speed & sound tab and set the volume between 0% and 200%. Exporting from the editor re-encodes the video, so it takes longer than muting.

Can I keep the sound as a separate file?

Yes. Before muting, use Video to MP3 to save the audio as an MP3. That's handy if you want to clean up the sound in another app and put it back later. See how to extract audio from a video.

Tips

  • Trim first if needed. Muting doesn't change the length. To cut the start or end too, use Trim Video or the editor's Trim tab.
  • Posting to TikTok or Reels? Muting the original music before adding a licensed sound in the app avoids two tracks playing at once.
  • Silent videos autoplay better. Many websites and browsers only autoplay videos without sound, so a muted clip is ideal for page backgrounds.

Removing the audio track takes the music out of the file completely, so there's nothing left for a platform's music detection to match. That's different from turning the volume down in an app, where the sound is still in the file. If you then add music inside TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, use their licensed sound libraries, which are cleared for use on that platform. Keep in mind that the video picture itself can also be someone else's copyright, so only post clips you have the right to share.

Is it free and private?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit. The work happens on your own device with FFmpeg running inside the browser, which keeps personal and work videos private.

Troubleshooting

  • "That is not a video file." Choose an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video.
  • The video won't preview. Some browsers can't play every codec, but muting still works because FFmpeg reads the file directly.
  • It's too big for your phone. Use a computer for very large files, or trim the video first.

Frequently asked questions

Does muting a video reduce its quality?

No. The picture is copied as it is and only the sound tracks are removed, so the video looks exactly the same.

Can I lower the volume instead of removing it?

Yes. Use the Video Editor's Speed & sound tab to set the volume anywhere from 0% to 200%.

Can I keep the audio as a separate file?

Yes. Use Video to MP3 to save the sound first, then mute the video.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Muting runs with FFmpeg inside your browser, so the video stays on your device.
