To extract audio from a video, open the free Video to MP3 tool, drop in your video, optionally trim it to the part you want, and press Export MP3. You get a high-quality MP3 that plays on any phone, computer or car. The conversion runs inside your browser, so the video is never uploaded.
When is extracting audio useful?
- Keeping the audio of a lecture, sermon, meeting or interview to listen to later
- Saving a voice message or recording you made on video
- Pulling the soundtrack of your own video to reuse in an edit
- Making a podcast clip from a video recording
- Turning a phone video of a performance into a song file
How do I convert a video to MP3?
- Add the video. Open Video to MP3 and drag in an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file, or click to choose. The output is already set to MP3 (sound only).
- Trim (optional). On the Trim tab, drag the start and end sliders, or play to the right moment and press Set to playhead. Only the chosen section is saved.
- Adjust the sound (optional). In Speed & sound you can raise a quiet recording up to 200% volume or change the speed; the sound keeps its pitch.
- Export MP3. Press Export MP3. The first time, the video engine (about 31 MB) loads and is cached.
- Download. Press Download to save the file.
Cropping and rotating don't apply to MP3, so those panels are disabled.
What quality is the MP3?
The tool encodes with LAME at variable-bitrate quality 2, a setting widely used for music because it sounds very close to the original while keeping files small. As a rough guide, a minute of audio comes out at around 1.3–1.6 MB. Speech-only recordings may be a little smaller.
Note that the MP3 can't be better than the audio in the video. If the video was recorded with a quiet or noisy microphone, the MP3 will sound the same. Raising the volume helps quiet recordings, but very loud settings can distort.
MP3 or another format?
MP3 is the most compatible audio format: it plays in every browser, phone, media player and car stereo, and it's accepted by almost every editing app and upload form. That's why it's the only audio option here. If you need the video too, export MP4 in the Video Editor.
Tips for the best result
- Trim first. Cutting the silence at the start and end makes the file smaller and nicer to listen to.
- Boost quiet speech. Set the volume to 130–160% for lectures recorded from the back of a room.
- Speed up lectures. 1.25× or 1.5× saves time and keeps the voice natural, because the pitch is preserved.
- Remove sound from the video instead? If you want the opposite, a silent video, use Mute Video.
Is it private and free?
Yes. FFmpeg runs inside your browser, so recordings of meetings, family events or classes stay on your device. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Troubleshooting
- "This video has no sound to save as MP3." The file has no audio track.
- The preview won't play. Some browsers can't preview every codec, but the export usually still works.
- Very long videos are slow. Extracting audio is quick compared with video encoding, but a multi-hour file still takes a while on a phone. Trim it into parts if needed.

Frequently asked questions
What quality is the MP3?
The tool uses high-quality variable bitrate encoding (LAME quality 2), which typically averages around 170–210 kbps and sounds very close to the original for most listeners.
Can I extract only part of the audio?
Yes. Set the start and end on the Trim tab before exporting, and only that section is saved.
Why does it say the video has no sound?
The video file has no audio track at all, for example a screen recording made without the microphone. There's nothing to extract.
Is it legal to extract audio from videos?
It's fine for your own videos and content you have permission to use. Don't extract and share copyrighted music or videos you don't have rights to.
