How to plan meals for type 2 diabetes

Quick answer: To plan meals for type 2 diabetes, use the plate method, spread carbohydrate evenly, choose high-fibre carbs and cut sugary drinks first.

  1. Use the plate method. Half the plate non-starchy vegetables, a quarter lean protein, a quarter whole-grain carbohydrate such as 1–2 whole-wheat roti or ¾ cup brown rice.
  2. Spread carbohydrate evenly. Similar amounts at each meal, without skipping meals, keeps blood sugar steadier.
  3. Choose high-fibre carbs. Daal, chana, rajma, oats, millets and whole grains raise blood sugar more slowly than white rice, maida and sugar.
  4. Cut sugary drinks first. Soft drinks, juice and sweetened chai raise blood sugar fastest; dropping them is the biggest single change.

How many carbs should someone with diabetes eat?

The American Diabetes Association says there is no single ideal amount; many people do well with about 40–45% of calories from carbohydrate, mostly high-fibre, spread evenly. Your diabetes team may set a gram target that fits your medicines.

Is rice OK with diabetes?

Yes, in measured portions. About ¾ cup of cooked rice, ideally brown or mixed with vegetables and eaten with daal or protein, raises blood sugar less than a large plate of plain white rice.

If you take insulin or sulfonylureas

Don't cut carbs sharply without talking to your doctor: it can cause low blood sugar. Learn the signs (shaking, sweating, confusion) and how to treat them with 15 g of fast sugar.

Frequently asked questions

Which fruits are best for diabetes?

Whole fruit in single portions is fine: guava, apple, pear, orange, berries and papaya are good choices. Mango, banana and grapes are fine in smaller portions. Avoid fruit juice.

Can I drink chai with diabetes?

Yes, without sugar. Use less milk or low-fat milk, and a non-nutritive sweetener if you need sweetness.

Will this diet reverse diabetes?

Weight loss of 10–15% puts some people with type 2 diabetes into remission, especially early on. Work with your doctor, and don't stop medicines on your own.
