To resize an image online, open Resize Image, pick a size from the list or choose Custom size, enter the width and height in pixels (or a percentage), choose how the photo should fit, and press Resize. Download each image or all of them as a zip. Nothing is uploaded; it all happens in your browser.
What do width, height and pixels mean?
Every digital image is a grid of pixels. A photo that is 4000 × 3000 has 4,000 pixels across and 3,000 down. Resizing changes that grid. Smaller grids mean smaller files and faster loading, which is why websites, forms and social apps ask for specific sizes.
The shape of an image is its aspect ratio. 4000 × 3000 is 4:3, a typical phone photo. 1920 × 1080 is 16:9, a widescreen video frame. When the size you need has a different ratio from your photo, you must decide what happens to the extra space. That is what the Fit setting is for.
How do I resize a photo step by step?
- Open Resize Image.
- Choose a Size. The list includes Full HD (1920 × 1080), HD (1280 × 720), Square (1080 × 1080), Small square (500 × 500) and Profile picture (400 × 400), or pick Custom size.
- For a custom size, choose By pixels and type the width and height, or By percentage and drag the slider (5% to 200%).
- Choose a Fit when the shape changes: Fill and crop, Fit with border, or Stretch.
- Pick the output Format (JPG, PNG or WebP) and, if a form needs it, a Max file size in KB.
- Drop your images and press Resize. Each result shows the old and new dimensions and the file size.
Fill and crop, fit with border, or stretch?
| Fit | What happens | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fill and crop | Fills the whole frame and trims the edges | Profile pictures, thumbnails, social posts |
| Fit with border | Keeps the whole photo and adds a coloured border | Product photos, posts where nothing may be cut |
| Stretch | Forces the photo into the frame, changing its shape | Almost never: faces look wrong |
With Fill and crop you can choose what to keep: Centre, or Top (faces), which keeps heads in portrait photos from being cut off. With Fit with border you choose the border colour; white is the usual choice.
If you tick Keep proportions on a custom pixel size, the photo is scaled to fit inside your width and height without any cropping or border.
Common sizes you might need
- Websites: 1200–2000 px wide for full-width images, 600–800 px for images within text.
- Email: 1600 px on the longest side keeps attachments light.
- Instagram: 1080 × 1350 for portrait posts. See our Instagram size guide.
- YouTube thumbnails: 1280 × 720. See the thumbnail guide.
- Passport photos: 600 × 600 for US 2 × 2 inch, 413 × 531 for 35 × 45 mm. Use Passport Size Photo.
How do I resize and stay under a file size limit?
Fill in Max file size (KB, optional) before pressing Resize. The tool resizes first, then lowers quality until the file fits. If even that isn't enough it makes the image a little smaller and tells you. For forms with only a KB limit, Compress to Exact KB is faster.
Why does my resized image look blurry?
- You made it bigger. Enlarging spreads the same detail over more pixels. Start from the original, largest version.
- It was resized more than once. Each step loses a little sharpness. Resize the original in one go.
- The quality was set too low. If you used a Max file size, try a larger limit or a smaller pixel size.
Does resizing remove photo data?
Yes. The resized copy doesn't keep hidden data such as GPS location. That's safer for photos you post publicly.
Is it private?
Your photos never leave your device. Resizing happens in your browser, so there is no upload, no account and no watermark.
Open Resize Image to start. If you only need a smaller file, not a new size, Compress Image is the quicker choice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I resize an image without stretching it?
Keep 'Keep proportions' ticked for a custom size, or choose 'Fill and crop' or 'Fit with border' when you need an exact width and height. Only 'Stretch' changes the shape.
Can I make a small image bigger without losing quality?
No tool can add real detail. Enlarging works for small steps, but the result looks softer. Start from the largest original you have.
Can I resize several photos at once?
Yes. Drop as many photos as you like; they all get the same size and you can download them together as a zip.
