Open the free YouTube Thumbnail Resizer1280 × 720 under 2 MB. Runs in your browser.

A YouTube thumbnail should be 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9) and under 2 MB, saved as JPG, PNG or GIF. Open the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer, keep "Thumbnail 16:9" selected (the 2,000 KB limit is already filled in), drop your image and press Resize. Then upload it in YouTube Studio.

What are YouTube's thumbnail rules?

  • Resolution: 1280 × 720 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • Formats: JPG, PNG or GIF
  • File size: under 2 MB

Custom thumbnails are only available once your account is verified. A small screenshot blown up to size, or a giant 4K design, are the usual reasons uploads fail.

How do I resize an image to a YouTube thumbnail?

  1. Open the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer.
  2. Keep Thumbnail 16:9 (1280 × 720) selected.
  3. Choose the Fit: Fill and crop to fill the frame, or Fit with border to keep the whole image.
  4. The Max file size field already says 2000 KB, YouTube's limit.
  5. Drop your image and press Resize, then download the JPG.
  6. In YouTube Studio, open the video's Details and choose Upload thumbnail.

What other YouTube image sizes do I need?

Image Size Notes
Video thumbnail 1280 × 720 Under 2 MB
Channel banner 2560 × 1440 Safe area for text: centre 1546 × 423
Profile picture 800 × 800 Shown as a circle
Shorts cover 1080 × 1920 Vertical 9:16

All four are presets in the resizer.

What makes a thumbnail get clicks?

  • One clear subject. A face showing emotion, or one object, reads well at small sizes.
  • Three to five words of text at most. Big, bold letters with strong contrast.
  • Bright, contrasting colours that stand out from YouTube's white or dark background.
  • Check it small. Most people see thumbnails at phone size. If it doesn't read at 200 pixels wide, simplify it.
  • Leave the bottom-right corner clear. YouTube shows the video length there.
  • Match the title. The thumbnail and title should tell one story together.

Why does my thumbnail look blurry on YouTube?

The image was probably smaller than 1280 × 720 and got stretched, or it was compressed too heavily. Design at 1280 × 720 or larger, and let the resizer reduce it. If it is a screenshot from a video, take it from the highest-quality version you have.

Can I make a thumbnail from a vertical photo?

Yes. Fit with border keeps the whole picture with coloured bars on the sides; choose a colour that matches your design. Fill and crop fills the frame but trims the top and bottom, so keep the subject centred.

JPG or PNG for thumbnails?

Use JPG for thumbnails built from photos or video frames: it keeps the file small and well under the 2 MB limit. PNG is sharper for flat graphics with big text, but PNG files grow quickly at 1280 × 720 and can go over the limit. The resizer saves JPG by default, and if you choose PNG it reduces the pixel size only when it has to.

A simple thumbnail workflow

  1. Pause your video at a strong moment, or take a photo for the thumbnail.
  2. Design it in any editor at 1280 × 720 or larger, with a short title in big letters.
  3. Run the design through the resizer to get exactly 1280 × 720 under 2 MB.
  4. Upload it, then look at the video in the YouTube app on your phone. If the text is hard to read, make it bigger or shorter.
  5. Keep a copy of the original design so you can change the text later without starting again.

Many creators test two or three thumbnails over a few weeks. YouTube Studio's analytics show the click-through rate, so you can see which design works best.

Is my design uploaded to your server?

No. Resizing happens in your browser. You only upload the finished thumbnail to YouTube yourself.
