Open the free Compress VideoMake videos smaller for WhatsApp and email. Runs in your browser.

To compress a video, open the free Compress Video tool, drop in your video and press Export. It's preset to 720p MP4 at the Small file quality, which typically shrinks phone videos dramatically while still looking good on a phone screen. For even smaller files, choose 480p; for better quality, choose Balanced. Nothing is uploaded.

Why are phone videos so big?

Modern phones record at 1080p or 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second, with high bitrates so the video looks great on a big screen. A one-minute 4K clip can easily be several hundred megabytes. Most of that detail is invisible when the video is watched on a phone in a chat app, which is why compression can cut the size so much without an obvious loss.

How do I compress a video step by step?

  1. Add the video. Open Compress Video and drag in an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file (up to about 2 GB on a computer).
  2. Check the settings. The Export settings panel opens with MP4, 720p and Small file already chosen.
  3. Trim (optional). Cutting unneeded parts on the Trim tab is the easiest way to save space.
  4. Export. Press Export MP4. The progress bar shows how far along it is. The first time, the video engine (about 31 MB) loads and is cached.
  5. Download and check the new size, shown next to the original.

Which settings should I choose?

Goal Resolution Quality
Send on WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger 720p Small file
Email attachment (about 20–25 MB limit) 480p or 720p Small file, plus trim
Upload form with a size limit 480p Small file
Keep it looking sharp on a laptop 1080p Balanced
Archive with little visible loss Original High (bigger file)

Resolution has the biggest effect: going from 4K to 720p reduces the number of pixels by about nine times. Quality controls how much detail each frame keeps. Small file is fine for phones; High keeps fine detail for big screens.

Video sizes are hard to predict exactly, because a still talking-head video compresses much more than a shaky clip of moving water. If the first result is too big, run it again at 480p or trim it shorter.

Tips for the smallest files

  • Trim first. Every second you cut is saved in full.
  • Mute if you don't need sound. Removing the audio saves a little extra; use Mute Video or the Mute button in Speed & sound.
  • Crop out what you don't need. A 9:16 crop of a landscape video has fewer pixels.
  • Turn short clips into GIFs only for silent loops; for anything longer, MP4 is far smaller. See how to convert video to GIF.

WhatsApp and email tips

WhatsApp compresses videos you send normally, often more than you'd like. Compressing yourself first lets you choose the balance between size and quality. If you need to send the original quality, WhatsApp can also send a video as a document, but that uses much more data for you and the receiver.

For email, many services limit attachments to about 20–25 MB in total. If your compressed video is still larger, trim it, lower the resolution, or share it through a cloud storage link instead.

Is it private?

Yes. The compression runs with FFmpeg inside your browser. Your video never leaves your device, and there's no watermark or account. That makes it safe for family videos, work recordings and anything personal.

Troubleshooting

  • It's slow. Encoding runs on your own processor in a single thread. Choose 480p, trim the clip, and close other heavy tabs.
  • The preview is blank. Some browsers can't preview every format, but the export usually works.
  • The browser runs out of memory. Try a computer instead of a phone, or split a very long video into parts with Trim Video.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reduce video size without losing much quality?

Lower the resolution to 720p and choose the Balanced or Small file quality. For most phone videos watched on a phone, 720p looks almost the same as 1080p or 4K at a fraction of the size.

What's the size limit for email attachments?

Many email services limit attachments to about 20–25 MB in total. For bigger videos, compress them first or share a cloud link.

Does WhatsApp reduce video quality?

Yes, WhatsApp compresses videos sent normally. Compressing yourself first gives you control over how it looks; sending as a document keeps the original but uses more data.

How long does compressing take?

It depends on the video's length and resolution and your device. A one-minute phone clip usually takes a minute or two on a laptop; long 4K videos can take much longer.
