How to Compress an Image to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB
Upload form says your photo is too big? Compress any image to under 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB in seconds, keeping the best quality.

To compress an image to a specific size, open Compress to Exact KB, type the limit your form asks for (for example 50), choose JPG, drop your photo and press Compress. The tool tries quality levels until the file lands just under your limit, shrinking the picture only if quality alone isn't enough.
Why do forms ask for 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB?
Government portals, exam boards, visa applications and job sites receive millions of uploads. Size limits keep their servers fast. The most common limits are:
| Limit | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 10–20 KB | Signatures, thumb impressions, small ID photos on exam forms |
| 50 KB | Photos on government, visa and exam applications |
| 100 KB | Job portals, college admissions, profile pictures |
| 200 KB | ID cards, scholarship forms, product listings |
| 500 KB | Real-estate listings, websites, marketplaces |
| 1 MB | Email attachments and general upload forms |
Each size has its own page with the target already set: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB and 1 MB.
How do I compress a photo to an exact KB size?
- Open Compress to Exact KB.
- Type your limit in Target size (KB), or tap one of the quick sizes: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB.
- Choose the Format. JPG is accepted everywhere and is the right default.
- Drop one or more photos onto the box. JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF all work.
- Press Compress to … KB. Each result shows its new size, pixel dimensions and the quality used.
- Download each file, or download them all as a zip.
If you change the target afterwards, the photos go back in the queue, so one more click redoes them at the new size.
How does the tool keep the best quality?
It searches instead of guessing. First it saves the photo at high quality. If that is too big, it tries lower qualities and narrows down to the highest one that still fits. Only when even a low quality is too big does it reduce the pixel size a little and try again. You get the sharpest photo that fits, without trial and error.
Photos already smaller than your target, in the right format, are kept exactly as they are.
Does the form also want a pixel size?
Many forms give two rules, for example "200 × 230 pixels, under 50 KB". Do it in two steps:
- Use Resize Image and type the exact width and height. Choose Fill and crop so nothing is stretched. Resize Image also has a Max file size field, so you can often do both at once.
- If you still need a specific size, run the result through Compress to Exact KB.
For passport and visa photos, Passport Size Photo has the official sizes built in. Our passport photo guide explains how to take one at home.
The form still says "file too large". What now?
- Check the KB definition. The tool uses 1,000 bytes per KB, which passes both 1,000- and 1,024-byte checks. If a form still refuses, set the target 5 KB lower.
- Check the format. Some forms accept only JPG or JPEG. Make sure the format is set to JPG, not WebP.
- Check the pixel size. Some portals reject images that are too large in pixels even if the KB size is fine. Resize to the dimensions they give.
- Rename carefully. Keep the .jpg ending. Some forms reject names with spaces or special characters; use something like
photo-2026.jpg.
Tips for signatures and ID photos
- Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, in good daylight.
- Photograph from directly above to avoid a slanted signature, then crop tightly.
- For face photos, use a plain light background and even lighting. Shadows add noise, and noise takes up kilobytes.
- Avoid screenshots of photos. They add blur and extra pixels.
Is it safe for ID documents?
Yes. Everything happens inside your browser, so your photo, signature or ID card is never uploaded to our server. Hidden data such as GPS location is removed from the compressed file too.
Open Compress to Exact KB and set your target. For general shrinking without a fixed limit, see how to compress images without losing quality.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce a photo to exactly 50 KB?
Open Compress to Exact KB, type 50 as the target, drop the photo and press Compress. The tool finds the highest quality that fits just under 50 KB and shrinks the picture only if it has to.
Why does the website say my 49 KB file is too big?
Some sites count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes and others as 1,000. The tool always uses 1,000 bytes per KB, so a file it makes under 50 KB passes both kinds of check.
Should I pick JPG or PNG for a form?
Pick JPG unless the form asks for PNG. PNG can't lower its quality, so it can only get smaller by losing pixels, which makes small targets look blurry.
Can I compress a signature to 20 KB?
Yes. Photograph or scan the signature on white paper, crop it close, then compress it to 20 KB as a JPG. Ink stays sharp at that size.
