How to eat to help an anal fissure heal

Quick answer: To eat to help an anal fissure heal, build fibre up slowly, drink 2–2.5 litres a day, swap maida and fried food and add a fibre helper if advised.

  1. Build fibre up slowly. Aim for 25–35 g a day over 1–2 weeks: whole-wheat or chokar roti, dalia, oats, daal, vegetables and fruit.
  2. Drink 2–2.5 litres a day. Fibre needs water to soften stools; without it, stools can get harder.
  3. Swap maida and fried food. Naan, white bread, biscuits and fried snacks for whole grains, fruit and roasted chana.
  4. Add a fibre helper if advised. Isabgol (psyllium) at night with a full glass of water, or soaked chia or flax seeds.

Why fibre and water matter for a fissure

Hard or large stools stretch the anal lining and reopen the tear. Soluble fibre (oats, isabgol, fruit) holds water and keeps stools soft; insoluble fibre (bran, vegetables) adds bulk so they pass easily. Together with fluids, they cut pain and let the fissure heal.

Diet is one part of treatment

Warm sitz baths, not straining, and going when you feel the urge are standard first steps. Your doctor may add a stool softener or a cream that relaxes the muscle. Most fissures heal within 6–8 weeks; ones that don't need a doctor's review.

When to see a doctor

Heavy or ongoing bleeding, a fissure that hasn't healed after 6–8 weeks, fever, pus or a painful lump, a lasting change in bowel habit, weight loss, or any rectal bleeding if you're over 50.

Very spicy food and lots of chillies can sting when you pass a stool, so many people feel better cutting back while it heals.

Psyllium (isabgol) softens stools and is widely used. Take it with a full glass of water and ask your doctor about the dose.
