How to eat with gestational diabetes

Quick answer: To eat with gestational diabetes, eat little and often, keep breakfast carbs smaller, spread at least 175 g of carbohydrate over the day and have a bedtime snack.

  1. Eat little and often. Three moderate meals and two or three snacks, never skipping breakfast.
  2. Keep breakfast carbs smaller. Blood sugar runs highest in the morning, so pair a smaller carb portion with protein (eggs, dahi, besan chilla).
  3. Spread at least 175 g of carbohydrate over the day. Choose whole grains, pulses and vegetables; avoid sweets, juice and sugary drinks.
  4. Have a bedtime snack. A small snack with protein, such as milk with whole-grain crackers, can help keep fasting sugar steady.

Why not cut carbs or lose weight?

Pregnancy needs energy. The American Diabetes Association and ACOG recommend at least 175 g of carbohydrate a day, and weight loss isn't a goal in pregnancy. If diet isn't enough, medicine or insulin is safe and common.

Food safety in pregnancy

Avoid alcohol, raw or undercooked meat, fish and eggs, unpasteurised milk and soft cheeses, and high-mercury fish (shark, swordfish, king mackerel). Keep caffeine under 200 mg a day, about two cups of tea or one coffee.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat for breakfast with gestational diabetes?

Will gestational diabetes go away after birth?
