An AVIF file is a modern, highly compressed image. To open it anywhere, convert it to JPG: open the AVIF to JPG converter, drop the .avif files in, keep quality at 92 and press Convert to JPG. You need a recent browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari 16.4+). Nothing is uploaded.

What is AVIF, in plain words?

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It takes the compression from AV1, a video format used by streaming services, and applies it to still pictures. The result is very small files that still look sharp:

  • Often around half the size of a JPG at similar quality
  • Smaller than WebP for many photos
  • Supports transparency, like PNG
  • Supports HDR and wide colour

That's why image-heavy websites, online shops and some phone cameras now use it.

Why can't I open my AVIF file?

AVIF is young. Browsers support it, but many other programs don't yet:

  • Older versions of Windows Photos, Paint and Office
  • Many image editors, upload forms and printing services
  • Older phones and smart TVs

JPG has worked everywhere for decades, so converting gives you a file anyone can open.

How do I convert AVIF to JPG?

  1. Open AVIF to JPG.
  2. Drag your .avif files onto the box, or click to choose them. Batches are fine.
  3. Keep Quality at 92, or lower it for smaller files.
  4. Pick a Colour for transparent areas if your images have any; white is the default.
  5. Press Convert to JPG and download each file, or all of them as a zip.

Expect the JPG to be larger than the AVIF. That's the price of compatibility, not a fault.

Should I convert to JPG or PNG?

Your AVIF is… Convert to
A photo JPG
A logo or graphic with transparency PNG (use WebP to PNG, which accepts AVIF too)
Going on a website Keep it as AVIF or use WebP

All the converters on this site accept any image your browser can open, so you can drop an AVIF into the PNG converter too. Our guide JPG vs PNG vs WebP explains when each format is best.

Is AVIF better than WebP and JPG?

For file size, usually yes. For compatibility, no. A simple rule:

  • Publishing on the web: AVIF or WebP for speed.
  • Sending to people, forms or printers: JPG.
  • Editing and keeping a master copy: PNG or the original camera file.

Where do AVIF files come from?

You usually meet AVIF in one of three ways:

  1. Saving an image from a website. Many large sites, shops and image services send AVIF to browsers that support it. Right-click, "Save image as", and you get an .avif file.
  2. Phone cameras. Some recent Android phones can save photos as AVIF or the related HEIF format to save space.
  3. Design and export tools. Web developers export AVIF to make sites faster, and those files end up shared in chats and email.

In every case the picture itself is fine. Only the format is the problem, and a quick conversion fixes it.

Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

A little, in theory, because JPG is also a lossy format. In practice, at quality 92 the difference is invisible for normal photos. Just avoid converting the same picture back and forth many times: convert once from the original and keep the AVIF in case you need it again.

Troubleshooting

  • "This browser can't open that image": update your browser, or try Chrome or Firefox. The converter relies on the browser's built-in AVIF decoder.
  • Colours look slightly different: some AVIF files use HDR or wide colour. JPG is standard range, so very bright highlights may look a little flatter.
  • Animated AVIF: only the first frame is converted.

Is it private?

Yes. Your browser does the decoding and encoding, so the images never leave your device. No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit.

Convert your files with AVIF to JPG. For WebP images, use WebP to JPG, and to shrink the results, try Compress Image.

Frequently asked questions

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is often around half the size of a JPG at similar quality and supports transparency and HDR.

Which browsers can open AVIF?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16.4 and later) all display AVIF. Older browsers and many desktop apps can't.

My browser says it can't open the AVIF file. What do I do?

Update your browser. The converter uses the browser's own image decoder, so an outdated browser can't read AVIF.
