To find what you need on your final, use: score needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the final's weight as a decimal. With 82% now, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%, you need 92% on the final. The Final Grade Calculator works it out instantly and shows what each exam score would give you overall.

What do I need to know first?

Three numbers, usually in your school portal and syllabus:

  1. Current grade: your percentage in the course before the final, for example 82%.
  2. Final exam weight: how much of the course grade the final is worth, for example 30%.
  3. Target grade: the overall percentage you want, for example 85% for a B or 90% for an A.

How is the score calculated?

Your final course grade is a weighted average:

Final grade = current × (1 − weight) + exam score × weight

Rearranged for the exam score:

Exam score needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

Example 1: reachable target

  • Current 82%, final worth 30% (0.3), target 85%
  • 82 × 0.7 = 57.4
  • (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 92%

You need at least 92% on the final.

Example 2: target out of reach

  • Current 85%, final worth 30%, target 90%
  • 85 × 0.7 = 59.5
  • (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.3 = 101.7%

You'd need over 100%, so 90% overall isn't possible without extra credit. Aim for the best realistic grade instead.

Example 3: already secured

  • Current 95%, final worth 20%, target 75%
  • 95 × 0.8 = 76, which is already above 75

Even a 0% on the final keeps you above your target.

What does the calculator show?

The Final Grade Calculator gives:

  • You need on the final: the minimum score for your target.
  • If you score 0% on the final: your floor.
  • A table of overall grades for exam scores of 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% and 50%.
  • A plain note if the target needs over 100% or is already secured.

The table is useful for planning: you can see exactly how much difference studying for an extra 10% would make.

How should I plan my revision?

  • Work backwards from the number. If you need 92%, you need to master almost everything; if you need 65%, focus on the core topics.
  • Use past papers under timed conditions; they're the best predictor of your score.
  • Study in focused blocks with the Pomodoro Focus Timer. Our guide to the Pomodoro Technique explains how.
  • Ask early about any remaining assignments or extra credit if the maths looks tight.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong current grade. Make sure it includes every graded item so far.
  • Wrong weight. Some syllabi split the final into parts (for example written and practical); add them up.
  • Points-based courses. If your course uses total points rather than percentages, convert to percentages first using the Percentage Calculator.
  • Letter grade boundaries. Check your school's cut-offs: an A might be 90% or 93%.

Frequently asked questions

What is the final grade formula?

Score needed = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight written as a decimal. For example, with 82% now, a final worth 30% and an 85% target: (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

Then the target can't be reached with the final alone. Ask your teacher about extra credit or remaining assignments, or set a slightly lower target.

What does it mean if the result is below 0%?

Your target is already secured: even a zero on the final would leave you at or above it. It's still worth taking the exam seriously, as some courses require a minimum exam score to pass.

Does this work for weighted categories?

Yes, as long as your current grade already reflects all the other weighted categories. Use the course grade shown in your school portal and the final's weight from the syllabus.
