Text to Speech Guide: Natural AI Voices and Free MP3s
How to turn text into natural-sounding speech and download it as an MP3: choosing a voice, writing text that sounds good aloud, limits and privacy.
By Browser Tools Team · · 3 min read
To turn text into speech, open the free Text to Speech tool, paste up to 500 characters, pick one of the nine AI voices, press Generate speech, listen, and press Download MP3. You get three free conversions a day with no sign-up. The voices sound natural, with pauses and emphasis that follow your punctuation.
Unlike most tools on this site, text to speech needs a server: the AI voice is made by a speech model, so your text is sent to our server and the voice provider to create the audio. It isn't stored.
What can I use text to speech for?
- Voice-overs for TikTok, Reels, Shorts and YouTube videos
- Narration for slides, tutorials and product demos
- Listening to articles, notes or study material while you travel or rest
- Accessibility, for people who find reading tiring or difficult
- Pronunciation checks for names, words in another language, or a speech you're about to give
- Phone menus and announcements for a small business
How do I make an MP3 from text?
- Paste your text. Open Text to Speech and type or paste into the box. The counter shows how many characters you've used; the free limit is 500 per conversion (5,000 with Pro).
- Pick a voice. Choose from nine voices: alloy, ash, coral, echo, fable, nova, onyx, sage and shimmer. Each has a different tone, from calm and warm to bright and energetic.
- Generate speech. Press Generate speech and wait a few seconds.
- Listen. The audio plays in the built-in player. If it isn't quite right, change the wording or the voice and try again.
- Download MP3. Press Download MP3 to save the file. MP3 plays on every phone and computer and works in every video editor.
How do I choose the right voice?
The quickest way is to compare. Write one short line that sounds like your project, for example "Here are three tips to sleep better tonight.", and generate it with two or three voices. As a rough guide:
| Project | Look for |
|---|---|
| Explainers, tutorials, e-learning | A calm, clear, even voice |
| Audiobook or story | A warm voice with a natural rhythm |
| Ads and social media | A brighter, more energetic voice |
| Announcements and phone menus | A neutral, steady voice |
How do I make text sound natural aloud?
The voice follows your writing, so small edits make a big difference:
- Use punctuation for pauses. Commas give short pauses and full stops longer ones. Line breaks between ideas help too.
- Write short sentences. Long, nested sentences are hard to follow when heard.
- Spell out tricky things. Write "twenty twenty-six" or "2026" consistently; spell out abbreviations ("for example" instead of "e.g.") and units ("kilograms").
- Help with names. If a name is mispronounced, try spelling it the way it sounds.
- Read it aloud yourself once. Anything you stumble over, the voice will too.
To trim your script to the free limit, the Word Counter shows characters and speaking time, and the Grammar & Writing Checker catches mistakes before you generate.
Which languages work?
The voices can read most major languages, including Spanish, French, German, Hindi and Japanese. They're tuned for English, so accents vary in other languages. Paste the text in the language you want; there's no separate language setting.
Adding the voice to a video
Download the MP3, then add it in your video app as a voice-over track. You can also use our browser tools: trim and crop the video in the Video Editor, and if the original video has sound you don't want, remove it first with Mute Video.

Please use AI voices responsibly: don't create audio that pretends to be a real person or is meant to mislead.
