To remove line breaks from text, paste it into a line break remover and choose whether to remove all breaks or keep paragraph breaks, and what to put in their place (usually a space). This fixes text copied from PDFs and emails, and turns a column of items into one line. The free Remove Line Breaks tool does it instantly in your browser.

Why does copied text have unwanted line breaks?

  • PDFs store each printed line separately, so copying adds a break at the end of every line.
  • Emails in plain text are often wrapped at around 70–80 characters.
  • Spreadsheets give you one item per line when you copy a column.
  • Subtitles and transcripts put a break every few words.

Pasted into a document or form, the result breaks mid-sentence and is hard to edit.

How do you use the tool?

  1. Open Remove Line Breaks.
  2. Paste your text.
  3. Choose what to remove:
    • Remove, but keep paragraphs: breaks inside paragraphs go; blank lines between paragraphs stay.
    • Remove all: everything becomes one continuous line.
  4. Choose what to replace them with: A space, Nothing, or Custom text… (for example ", " or " | ").
  5. Copy the result.

The text is processed in your browser and isn't uploaded.

Which option should you choose?

Situation Remove Replace with
Text copied from a PDF article Remove, but keep paragraphs A space
Email quote for a document Remove, but keep paragraphs A space
A column of emails for the "To" field Remove all Custom: "; " or ", "
A list of keywords or tags Remove all Custom: ", "
Subtitle text into one paragraph Remove all A space
A number split across lines Remove all Nothing

Example: a column into a comma-separated list

Before:

Lahore
Karachi
Islamabad

With Remove all and custom text ", " it becomes:

Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad

That's handy for spreadsheet cells, email recipients, tag fields and SQL IN (…) lists. If the column has repeats, remove them first with Remove Duplicate Lines; see how to remove duplicate lines from a list.

How do you do it in Word or Excel?

  • Word: Find and Replace, find ^p (paragraph mark) and replace with a space. This also removes real paragraph breaks, so many people first replace ^p^p with a placeholder, then ^p with a space, then the placeholder back with ^p.
  • Excel: in Find and Replace, press Ctrl+J in the "Find what" box to search for line breaks inside cells.
  • Google Docs: Find and replace with "Use regular expressions" and search for \n.

These work, but they're fiddly and easy to get wrong. The tool's "keep paragraphs" option does the same job in one step.

Tips for transcripts and subtitles

Auto-generated captions and subtitle files put a line break every few words. To turn them into readable paragraphs:

  1. Choose Remove all and replace breaks with A space, so the transcript becomes one block.
  2. Read through and add paragraph breaks where the speaker changes topic, roughly every 3–5 sentences.
  3. Remove timestamps and speaker labels you don't need before you start, or after with find-and-replace in your editor.
  4. Run it through the Grammar & Writing Checker to catch missing capitals and repeated words that speech-to-text often leaves behind.

The result is much easier to quote in an article, a blog post or show notes.

Fixing other copy-paste problems

Line breaks are often only one of the problems. Text from PDFs and websites can also carry double spaces, curly quotes and invisible characters. Remove Formatting fixes all of those, including joining wrapped lines into paragraphs; see how to remove formatting from copied text.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove line breaks but keep paragraphs?

Choose "Remove, but keep paragraphs". Single line breaks inside a paragraph are removed, while blank lines between paragraphs stay.

How do I turn a list into a comma-separated line?

Choose "Remove all" and replace the breaks with custom text: a comma and a space. A column of names becomes "Ali, Sara, John".

Will words get stuck together?

Not if you replace line breaks with a space (the default). Choose "Nothing" only when the breaks split words or numbers that should join.

Can I do this in Word or Excel?

Yes, with find-and-replace using special characters (^p in Word, Ctrl+J in Excel), but it's easy to remove paragraph breaks by accident. A dedicated tool is quicker and safer.
