To convert Word to PDF without Microsoft Word, open Word to PDF, drop your .docx file in, choose A4 or US Letter and a margin, and press Download PDF. You get a PDF with real, selectable text. For documents in non-Latin scripts or with complex layouts, press Print / Save as PDF instead and pick "Save as PDF" as the printer.
Why send a PDF instead of a Word file?
A PDF looks the same on every device. A Word file can shift when the reader has different fonts, a different version of Word, or opens it on a phone. PDFs are also harder to edit by accident, which is why employers, universities and offices ask for them. Common uses:
- CVs and cover letters for job applications
- Assignments and theses for submission portals
- Letters, quotes and contracts for clients
- Documents to print at a shop that only accepts PDF
How do I convert a .docx to PDF step by step?
- Open Word to PDF.
- Drop your .docx file onto the box, or click to choose it. A preview of the document appears.
- Choose the page size: A4 or US Letter. Visitors in the US and Canada start with Letter, everyone else with A4.
- Choose the margins: Narrow (0.5 in), Normal (0.75 in) or Wide (1 in).
- Press Download PDF.
If some Word features were simplified, the page tells you so you can check the PDF before sending it.
What is kept and what is simplified?
Kept: headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, underline, links, bullet and numbered lists (including nested lists), tables (which split across pages with the header repeated), images and page numbers.
Simplified: text boxes, multiple columns, headers and footers, unusual fonts and exact Word spacing. Most free converters make similar trade-offs.
When should I use Print / Save as PDF instead?
The Print / Save as PDF button lets your browser lay out the document with your device's fonts. Choose it when:
- The document is in Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese or another non-Latin script (the direct PDF would show "?" for those letters).
- You want the layout to match the on-screen preview closely.
In the print dialog, set the destination or printer to Save as PDF. On a phone, look for Save to Files or Save as PDF in the share options.
Tips for a clean PDF
- Use real headings (Heading 1, Heading 2) in Word rather than big bold text. They convert into proper PDF headings.
- Keep images inline with text rather than floating; floating images may move.
- Check tables with many columns; very wide tables are scaled to fit the page.
- Name the file clearly, such as
cv-jane-doe.pdf. The PDF uses the Word file's name.
Can I do it on my phone?
Yes. Open the tool in your phone's browser and choose the .docx from Files, Google Drive (downloaded first) or your email attachments. The PDF downloads to your phone, ready to share.
Troubleshooting
- "Old .doc files aren't supported": open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and save it as .docx.
- "The PDF couldn't be made": try Print / Save as PDF, which handles more layouts.
- Letters appear as "?": the document uses characters outside the standard PDF fonts; use Print / Save as PDF.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Most online converters upload your file to their server. This one reads the .docx and builds the PDF inside your browser, so CVs, contracts and private letters stay on your device.
