Gout Diet: Low-Purine Foods to Eat and Avoid

A gout diet guide: high- and low-purine foods, sugary drinks and alcohol, water targets, desi and Western meals, a sample day, and what to eat during a flare.

A gout diet keeps uric acid down by limiting high-purine foods (organ meats, some seafood and large portions of red meat), avoiding sugary drinks and beer, and drinking 2 to 3 litres of water a day. Base meals on vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, eggs and daal. If you're overweight, gradual weight loss also helps.

Why does food matter in gout?

Gout happens when uric acid builds up and forms crystals in joints, causing sudden, painful flares. Your body makes uric acid when it breaks down purines, which are found in some foods. Diet alone rarely cures gout, and many people need medicine such as allopurinol, but the right diet can reduce flares. The NHS and the Arthritis Foundation give similar advice.

Which foods are high in purines?

Avoid or keep very rare:

  • Organ meats: liver, kidney, brain (kaleji, gurda, maghaz)
  • Some seafood: sardines, anchovies, mussels, scallops, shellfish
  • Meat gravies and stocks
  • Beer and spirits
  • Sugary drinks and juices with fructose

Limit:

  • Red meat: mutton, beef (small portions, a few times a week at most)
  • Prawns and some fish such as tuna
  • Alcohol of any kind

What are good low-purine foods?

  • Vegetables of all kinds, including spinach, cauliflower and peas
  • Fruit, especially cherries, oranges and berries
  • Whole grains: roti, oats, brown rice
  • Low-fat dairy: milk, dahi, yogurt, which may lower uric acid
  • Eggs
  • Daal, chana and beans (plant purines don't raise gout risk like meat does)
  • Chicken in moderate portions
  • Water, plus tea or coffee without sugar

What does a sample gout-friendly day look like?

  • Breakfast: oats with low-fat milk and berries, or 2 eggs with whole-wheat toast
  • Mid-morning: an orange or a bowl of cherries
  • Lunch: 2 roti, daal, mixed vegetable sabzi, salad, a bowl of plain dahi
  • Snack: low-fat yogurt or fruit
  • Dinner: a moderate portion of chicken curry or paneer with vegetables and ¾ cup rice
  • All day: 8 to 12 glasses of water

What should you eat during a gout flare?

Stick to the lowest-purine choices, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol completely, and take the medicine your doctor prescribed. Rest the joint and use ice. Don't start a crash diet during a flare; fasting can raise uric acid.

Which swaps help most?

  • Soft drinks and juice → water or lemon water
  • Beer → no alcohol, or very little on rare occasions
  • Mutton curry → chicken, egg or daal curry
  • Kaleji or gurda → avoid completely
  • Sardines or shellfish → small portions of white fish now and then

What should be on the grocery list?

Vegetables, cherries, oranges and berries, whole-wheat atta, oats, brown rice, daal and chana, eggs, chicken, low-fat milk and yogurt, olive or mustard oil, lemons.

How do you track uric acid?

Your doctor checks uric acid in a blood test. Many guidelines aim for under 6 mg/dL when you're on treatment. You can read your result in the blood test checker.

When should you see a doctor?

Get medical help for a hot, red, very painful joint, especially with fever, as this can also be an infection. See your doctor if flares become frequent, or if you notice lumps (tophi) under the skin.

Does coffee or vitamin C help gout?

Some studies link regular coffee and vitamin C intake with lower uric acid levels, but the effect is modest. Coffee without sugar can be part of a gout diet. Ask your doctor before taking vitamin C supplements, and don't rely on them instead of medicine.

What about weight loss and gout?

Losing extra weight gradually can lower uric acid and reduce flares. Avoid crash diets and fasting, which can raise uric acid in the short term and trigger an attack. Aim for slow, steady loss with a balanced, low-purine diet and regular activity.

How do you eat out with gout?

Choose vegetable, egg, paneer or chicken dishes over mutton, organ meats and seafood platters. Skip beer and sugary drinks, and drink plenty of water. At barbecues, pick chicken or vegetable skewers and fill half your plate with salad.

What should you do next?

Gout often comes with high blood pressure and kidney problems. Read how to choose a diet for your health condition if you have more than one. Then create your week with the gout diet plan maker.

Frequently asked questions

What foods should I avoid with gout?

Organ meats like liver and kidney, some seafood such as sardines, anchovies, mussels and shellfish, large portions of red meat, beer and spirits, and drinks sweetened with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.

Can I eat daal and beans with gout?

Yes. Plant foods like daal, beans and vegetables, even those with moderate purines, don't raise gout risk the way meat and seafood do. They're a good protein source for people with gout.

How much water should I drink with gout?

Around 2 to 3 litres of fluid a day, mostly water, helps the body remove uric acid, unless your doctor has given you a fluid limit.
