Foods That Lower Cholesterol: A Practical Diet Plan
Foods that lower LDL cholesterol, what to limit, desi and Western swaps, a sample day, and how much saturated fat and fibre to aim for, based on guidelines.

The foods that lower cholesterol most are oats, barley, beans, lentils and other sources of soluble fibre, plus nuts, oily fish and unsaturated oils like olive, mustard or canola. The biggest change comes from cutting saturated fat (ghee, butter, fatty meat, full-fat dairy) to about 6% of calories and avoiding trans fats.

How does food change cholesterol?
LDL ("bad") cholesterol rises when you eat a lot of saturated and trans fat. Soluble fibre binds some cholesterol in the gut so less is absorbed. Replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat lowers LDL, and losing extra weight can lower triglycerides and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol. The NHS and the US NHLBI give the same core advice.
What should you eat to lower cholesterol?
- Oats and barley: a bowl of oats or daliya for breakfast gives soluble fibre
- Pulses: daal, chana, rajma, lentils, beans most days
- Vegetables: okra (bhindi), aubergine, carrots, leafy greens
- Fruit: apples, guava, oranges, berries, pears
- Nuts and seeds: a small handful of almonds or walnuts, flax or chia seeds
- Oily fish: twice a week, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines or trout
- Oils: olive, mustard, canola or sunflower oil, measured
- Soy foods: tofu, soy milk
Aim for 10 to 25 g of soluble fibre a day within a total of at least 30 g of fibre.
What should you limit or avoid?
Limit: red meat, eggs fried in butter, full-fat milk, cheese, paneer, cream, coconut milk, white bread and refined grains, sweets.
Avoid: vanaspati and other partially hydrogenated fats, deep-fried foods (samosa, puri, pakora, fries), processed meats, bakery items made with shortening, and large amounts of ghee and butter.
Sugar and refined carbs don't contain cholesterol but raise triglycerides, so keep them low too.
What does a cholesterol-lowering day look like?
- Breakfast: oats cooked in low-fat milk with apple and walnuts; tea without sugar
- Mid-morning: a guava or pear
- Lunch: 2 whole-wheat roti, rajma or chana, bhindi sabzi made with a teaspoon of mustard oil, salad
- Snack: roasted chana or a few almonds
- Dinner: baked fish or tofu stir-fry with vegetables and ¾ cup brown rice
- Evening: low-fat yogurt with flaxseed
Which simple swaps help most?
- Ghee or butter tadka → mustard or olive oil tadka
- Paratha → plain roti
- Full-fat milk → low-fat or skimmed milk
- Red meat curry → chicken, fish or daal curry
- Biscuits → nuts or fruit
- Fried snacks → roasted chana or popcorn without butter
What should be on the grocery list?
Oats, barley or daliya, whole-wheat atta, brown rice, lentils, chickpeas and beans, bhindi and leafy greens, apples, guava and berries, walnuts and almonds, flaxseed, tofu, fish, low-fat yogurt and milk, olive or mustard oil.
How long does it take to see results?
Many people see a change in their lipid profile after 6 to 12 weeks of steady changes. Check your new results with the lipid profile checker to see how LDL, HDL and triglycerides compare with standard targets, and discuss them with your doctor.
When do you need more than diet?
If you have very high LDL (for example from familial hypercholesterolaemia), heart disease, diabetes or a high heart-risk score, your doctor may recommend medicine as well. Don't stop prescribed statins without medical advice.
What are cholesterol-friendly breakfasts?
- Oats or barley porridge with fruit and walnuts
- Besan chilla cooked with a teaspoon of oil
- Wholemeal toast with avocado or peanut butter and tomato
- Low-fat yogurt with berries and ground flaxseed
- Vegetable upma with a sprinkle of seeds
How do you cook desi food with less saturated fat?
Measure oil with a spoon, use mustard, olive or canola oil instead of ghee and vanaspati, trim fat from meat and remove chicken skin, and cook gravies with tomatoes, yogurt and spices rather than cream or coconut milk. Grill, bake or air-fry instead of deep-frying, and save festive foods made with ghee for special occasions.
Do plant sterols and supplements help?
Foods with added plant sterols can lower LDL a little when eaten daily, and psyllium husk adds soluble fibre. They help on top of a good diet, not instead of it. Ask your doctor before starting any supplement, especially if you take other medicines.

Frequently asked questions
What foods lower cholesterol fastest?
Foods rich in soluble fibre such as oats, barley, beans and lentils, plus nuts, and replacing saturated fats with unsaturated oils give the clearest effect on LDL. Changes usually show on a blood test after a few weeks to months.
Are eggs bad for cholesterol?
For most people, eggs in moderation are fine within a diet low in saturated fat. The bigger problem is usually what eggs are cooked in and eaten with, such as butter, paratha or processed meat.
Can diet alone lower cholesterol?
Diet can lower LDL noticeably, but some people still need medicine because of genetics or high heart risk. Keep taking statins or other medicines unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
